What is FTP? File Transfer Protocol or FTP makes it possible for you to change and add files to your network server. Once you receive your username and password from your web host, you can log into your web server and start uploading your files using a FTP client.

FTP Clients need to be reliable and secure because the internet is one large network used by many people from all over the world. Even though the internet is designed to be secure, there are people who fish for passwords and other personal information.

FileZilla is a FTP client that is designed to guard against these kind of attacks.

Download FileZilla.

To use FileZilla you must enter your domain name and password. Once you are connected, the files on your computer will appear in the left panel. The files on your web server will appear in the right panel.

FileZilla is a FTP client that sends your files to your web server and sends files from your web server back to your computer. If you delete a file that is on your web site’s server, you can drag it back to your computer using FileZilla.

So, how does a web site work? You may very well be the person who uses a program to make a web site for you, but do not know how to get it onto the web. Don’t worry, it is not that difficult.

A web site runs a lot like your computer. The files on your computer are stored on your hard drive. The files you use on your web site are stored on your computer’s hard drive and on a “internet hard drive” called a web server. Web servers are owned by companies, individuals, and organizations who allow you to display your web site on the servers they own for an annual fee.

Every time you send files to the web server you have to connect to the server using a password supplied by your hosting company. Often several web sites are placed on one web server by your hosting company.

The first step putting a web site on the world wide web is to find a hosting company. I recommend shopping around online for a web host. Read several reviews about it, and then consider buying a years worth of hosting.

Often web hosts will include the cost of your domain name within the overall cost of their web hosting service. They may also allow you to host more that one website on the server. However, you can expect to pay the cost of the new domain name.

Once you found a web server, and start hosting your web site with them, they will send you an e-mail with your username and password. Do not delete this e-mail. Use it to log into your web server. Print out the e-mail and store it in a safe place.
